Shin Splints (Tibial Fasciitis)
Foot Conditions and Problems
Shin Splints (Tibial Fasciitis)
Previously known as Shin Splints, Tibial Fasciitis is a common lower extremity problem involving pain and tenderness around the tibia.
Cause
Many factors can contribute to stressing the fascia around the tibia including overuse, trauma, and rapid changes in activity. The leading cause of Tibial Fasciitis is use of conventional footwear, specifically footwear containing;
- Heel elevation
- Toe spring
- Tapered toe boxes
- Rigid, inflexible soles
Signs and Symptoms
The most common signs and symptoms of Tibial Fasciitis include;
- Local Pain
- Irritation
- Swelling
Recovery
Many factors can impact the recovery of Tibial Fasciitis, including
- Ankle and calf strengthening exercises
- Use of Footwear that is flat, widest at the ends of the toes, and flexible to encourage natural foot alignment, and proper lower leg musculature length-to-tension relationships.
- Correct Toes toe-spacers to provide an improved, lower-impact gait pattern, which in turn reduces stress to the periosteum.
- A proper training plan that addresses slow and progressive increases in athletic duration, frequency and intensity.
